SUMMER WORKSHOPS

ADULTS

Papier Maché Sculpting Instructor: Jan Jones, Saturday, June 13, 2009, 9 a.m. –4 p.m., and Sunday, June 14, 2009, 1:00 p.m.—4 p.m., bring a lunch on Saturday. Members*: $130/ All others: $150, all supplies included.
This day and a half, hands-on workshop in Jan’s studio at her home in lovely Magnolia Springs will show you sculpting techniques you’ve never thought of! No sculpting experience is necessary to have fun and create. Students will create a papier mache animal using this extremely versatile medium. This is not your “grammar school” papier mache! For years, Jan has pushed, prodded, poked, “squished” and torn fabric, paper, foil and clay to form “uncommon” creations from these “common” materials, giving an entirely new meaning to sculpting. Her sculptures have been sold in specialty shops across the southeast. Jan’s unique perceptions make her classes a fun-filled learning experience. She encourages her students to experiment, stay playful, and listen to their “inner artist” even if you don’t think you have one!

Slips, Textures, Templates & Mold-Making Techniques Instructor: Maria Spies, Aug. 3-7, 2009, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.. Bring a lunch. Members*: $300/All others: $350.
This 5 day workshop will cover all those techniques in clay that you wish you had time to explore in the studio. Each day will cover a different topic that you can make use of in the studio for years to come. Bring your ideas and questions and let Maria’s 36 years of experience help you with the answers. Topics are: Working with plaster and learning how to make simple molds. Making templates for that odd shaped piece you wish to make colored clays and slips. The final day, if you’re not exhausted, will be spent trying out all those molds, templates, textures, slips and color clays.

Loose and Colorful Painting Workshop
with William D. Thompson, Friday & Saturday, Aug. 7-8, 2009, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m., Studio 4. Members*: $175/All others: $225.
This workshop will explore the use of form and color in the creation of clean and lively paintings. We will
study the application of shapes, values and edges in paintings to produce a “loose and colorful” look. We will also take a look at the various aspects of color including chroma, use of grey, temperature, transparency, mixing and color tables. Design and composition are at the heart of any successful painting and we will explore various cropping techniques to produce designs that are powerful and appealing to a wide audience. Beginners and advanced painters using oil or acrylics are encouraged to participate. William Thompson is a popular local artist whose work has been seen locally at the Fairhope Arts & Crafts Show, the Grand Festival of Art (Best of Show 2008) and Ashland Gallery. Instructor:  James Hood, Sept 17,18, 24, 25 2009 from 9:00am to 4:00pm
Supporting level member & above:  $225/All others: $275
Local artist, James Hood has a flair for working “outside the box” and “pushing the envelope” in new directions.  In the course of this four day workshop, you will explore the mysteries and advantages of making and using paper clay, which James describes as “ordinary clay on steroids.”  Things go faster and farther than with ordinary clay techniques.  Imagination and the willingness to experiment are the best tools you can bring to this workshop!  The first two days of the workshop will explore the properties of paper clay and using slab-building techniques for achieving texture and detail will be emphasized, using common tools and materials found in every kitchen, or garage and in nature.  The following week’s two days will be spent completing your projects using glazes and other finishing techniques.  Familiarity with basic clay techniques is helpful but not necessary.  Bring any clay tools you have on hand.  Beginner sets are available for purchase at a nominal fee, but you will quickly learn that there are limitless kitchen and workshop items that lend themselves to working with clay.  Firing and all materials are included, just bring a lunch.
