THE BLUE FACES OF KATRINA
This project started out as a part of the continuing series of Hurricane Healing projects that the ABC Project delivered, beginning with the impact of Ivan on our community
.
A call for Hurricane Healing went into the newspapers, and hurricane evacuees began showing up for art sessions to help them release and express their emotions from the devastating effects of Katrina.
We first began with discussing what each person had been through, and where they were at the time. We then did a quick crayon drawing of something that person had experienced ( a tree falling on their house, finding a dead pet, losing a house, etc)
Each student then followed a demo of how to make a blue face, with white, black, and blue pigment only. We talked about how Picasso went through his blue phase after losing a dear friend.
They each created a face with only those three colors, and signed it with their name and hometown.
The teachers of the area reacted with blue face projects of their own design, and this culminated in an art show here that brought many people to come see it, including many evacuees were impacted by it. Many pieces of the show had opportunities to travel, to special events where the Red Cross volunteers celebrated their members, to book readings about Katrina, and more.
