A CALL TO SERVE

War Posters from the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art

JULY 2 THROUGH JULY 31

PERMUTATIONS IN CLAY

Artwork by Maria Spies

AUGUST 6 THROUGH AUGUST 28

Use of a unique firing technique, Suggar Firing, will be a part of Spies’ August exhibit. With this method each vessel is thrown using the pottery wheel. It is then burnished and wrapped in salted hay. The piece is then fired slowly in Spies' gas kiln. The purity of the porcelain use in the Saggar technique brightens and enhances the natural colors. It also leaves a beautiful sheen on the surface of the Saggar fired pot.

A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT

AUGUST 6 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 25

A River Runs Through It is an environmental project that will portray the rivers of Alabama and how they are all connected, leading into our very own Mobile Bay. Initially, the project was designed to capture the rivers and themes of clean water and environmental protection across the state. Now with the impending oil spill fast approaching our shore, we are adding some other visuals that will allow the expression of the students to show all the creatures of the sea that they wish they could rescue (from the oil). Picture one continuous river on the walls of the Courtyard Gallery flowing into the Bay, which will be represented on the floor of the gallery, through the use of tarpaper and booms. The river scenes have been created in various locations across the state, including Prattville, Auburn, Mobile and Baldwin Counties, and will be continuing through a series of workshops this summer with Weeks Bay, and the Alabama Alliance for Arts Education
(a summer workshop held in Montgomery). The students have been illustrating the animals, birds, flowers, trees, lizards and fish that depend on the waters of our state. Now they will be reacting to the impact on our environment from the oil spill.
