Painting With Paper

Join us for a two-day workshop “painting with papers/” On Saturday, we will prepare our own painted and manipulated papers as well as other elements to use in creating beautiful collage pieces. We will also explore mixed media using other mediums, household materials and bits of ephemera. Unlock your imagination with experimental techniques! If you have wanted to try mixed media &.or collage, this is your opportunity. There will be some basics for the beginner combined with advanced techniques for the experienced artist. Papers and other elements created in the beginning portion of the class will be used later to compose both representational and abstract art pieces. Bring a sack lunch. Color is like the window dressing of a painting and creates a most powerful
impact. I like to call this COLOR SURPRISE. Color can either make or break
a painting. In this three day class, we will explore your personal color sense
and how to make color work for you. Each day I will present a different
way to make this happen. Be prepared to work on three different paintings,
old or new. All mediums are welcome. The purpose is not to have a
finished painting each day but to hopefully stimulate you into seeing color
differently so that you will be able to have a successful painting.
Jo Patten is a full time working artist and her paintings are in numerous
public and private collections and have been accepted in both regional and
national juried shows. Jo is a signature member of the Southern Watercolor
Society and the Alabama Watercolor Society. She is best known for her
Watercolor and acrylic impressions of the Mobile Bay area.

Local artist, James Hood has a flair for working “outside the box” and “pushing the envelope” in new directions. In the course of this four day workshop, you will explore the mysteries and advantages of making and using paper clay, which James describes as “ordinary clay on steroids.” Things go faster and farther than with ordinary clay techniques. Imagination and the willingness to experiment are the best tools you can bring to this workshop! The first two days of the workshop will explore the properties of paper clay and using slab-building techniques for achieving texture and detail will be emphasized, using common tools and materials found in every kitchen, or garage and in nature. The following week’s two days will be spent completing your projects using glazes and other finishing techniques. Familiarity with basic clay techniques is helpful but not necessary. Bring any clay tools you have on hand. Beginner sets are available for purchase at a nominal fee, but you will quickly learn that there are limitless kitchen and workshop items that lend themselves to working with clay. Firing and all materials are included, just bring a lunch.

Opaque watercolor? Who ever heard of such? This three day workshop will help you think of watercolor painting in a totally new way. Discover your unique style as we paint a still life with multiple textural surfaces. Chris will do the drawing and you will do the painting. Bring a tube of Windsor & Newton permanent white gouache, one tube of Holbein Opera, your regular palette of watercolors, an open mind and a sense of humor. We’ll have some fun. Chris is a self-trained watercolorist who works primarily with bright, clean colors to achieve a realistic style of painting. Since he began his art career in 1988, he has participated in many national and regional competitions, and has won numerous “Best in Show” and other awards in over 350 juried art shows. Working from direct observation in paintings is one of the most beneficial
means of achieving growth as an artist. This workshop will give one that
opportunity. We will focus on the still life, collecting materials to be used
and obtaining ideas will be explored. Composition, color and technique will
be key components of the workshop. Together the artists will learn from
good painting examples. There will also be group and individual critiques,
as well as an opportunity for one to bring in outside work to be critiqued.
Ann Warner has a Bachelor of Science from LSU and teaches oil painting
workshops throughout the year in two main areas, still life and plein air.
She has taught regional and international workshops. To see examples of
